SNR is back with a quick update of the Fosters World Championship Tour after stop # 8. Will Mick win it all at the Hang Loose Pro in Brazil? Also a 1^st for SNR – A contest that could win you some cool garb.

Mick grabs the first win on the Fosters World Championship Tour in front of his hometown Snapper Rocks crowd of 10,000 plus. In an all Cooly Kids final surfing against longtime friend and currently unsponsored Bede Durbidge, Mick proved to the world that he owns Snapper Rocks. Mick is the first competitor to win his second victory at Snappers (previously won in 2005) pushing Mick up to the number 1 spot on the ratings and setting him up for  potential first world title. Mick Fanning wins the Nova Schin Festival in Brazil by defeating Damien Hobgood in the finals. In mostly windy punchy conditions Mick proved he was the better surfer by getting a total heat combined score of  18.77 out of 20.00. Previous year’s winner Damo struggled throughout the heat ending up left in comboville. This is Mick’s “three times a charmâ€? win here at the Nova Schin in the last 5 years propelling him up to the number two spot behind Kelly. Listen in as Davo recaps the action.

 

SL8TER wins an unprecedented 8^th world title today at the Billabong Pro Spain and Rookie of the Year Bobby Martinez wins the event. Kelly clinched the title with 2 events still remaining on the Fosterâ??s World Championship Tour â?? Brazil and Pipe. In order to keep the race alive either AI, Taj or Parko needed to finish better than Sl8ter. Taj was eliminated by Dean Morrison and Bobby took down Andy in the quarters. All Kelly needed to do was beat Parko in the semiâ??s and the title would be his. He did just that by posting an 16.50 over Parkoâ??s 14.14. Meanwhile Bobby Martinez beats Kelly in the final by owning the entire heat. Busting a 7.00 out the door and backing it up 8.83 Bobby wins his second CT event in his rookie year on the tour putting him 6^th in the rankings behind Mick 5^th, Parko 4^th, Taj, 3^rd and AI 2^nd.

Parko goes head to head with good mate and local Cooly Boy Mick Fanning. In Parko’s first win since the 2004 Boost Mobile Pro he got things started early with a double tube to air for a crushing 8.83. An overall 15.17 to Mick’s 7.67 proved that Parko was the dominate surfer of the event in Hossegor. Listen in as Davo brings you all of the final action.

 

Bede Durbidge (Aus) wins the Boost Mobile Pro Presented by Hurley

Bede takes down Kelly in the final and prevents Kelly's back to back assault on Lowers at the Boost Mobile Pro of Surfing presented by Hurley. In his first ever CT final, the second year tour veteran beats Kelly in 4-6ft. bumpy wind blown conditions. On his way to the podium, Bede proves he is a contender by taking down none other than the 3 time world champ Andy Irons (13.06-10.70), Chris Ward (13.83-13.27) and then beating an seemingly unstoppable Taj Burrow (14.00-8.67). Bede got an early score putting Kelly in the unusual position of catching up. The ocean went flat and Kelly was hopping on anything and everything he could get his hands on. Late in the heat Kelly let one go and Bede took advantage nailing down a 7.3. Kelly was almost in combo land leaving him with a 9.16 to overtake the lead. Rob Machado makes it 3 with his win over Roy Powers and 100,000 plus fans at the US Open of Surfingâ??s Bank of the West Beach Games presented by Oâ??Neil in Huntington Beach, CA. With only 2.63 points separating the two (13.83-11.20) Rob avenges his last minute defeat at the hands of AI in last years US Open to win in 2006. The Mobster abandoned his typical strategy of sitting way south down at Machadoâ??s Peak and instead nabbed a couple backhanders by the pier to take down Hawaiian Roy Powers. The crowd goes crazy and escorts a smiling Rob to the stage. This is not the last we have seen of Rob. He is heading to Europe to compete in a 5 star QS event then will head back to the US for the Boost Mobile Pro at Trestles where he recently won a wildcard. Do you smell a 2007 CT comeback from the Mobster? Only Rob knows.

Mick Fanning wins the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay by defeating good friend Taj Burrow. With an increase in swell and near perfect 4-6 ft conditions Taj and Mick battled back and forth in the final. With just a few minutes to go and Taj only needing an 8.41 after Mick posting an 8.73 the perfect set wave rolled in with Taj’s priority. As Mick watched his win potentially slip away Taj buried  a rail and went down. The bell rung and Mick was the winner. This puts Mick now at the number 8 spot and pushes Taj up to the number 2 spot. Watch out Kelly, the heat is on!!

Andy Irons defeated Taylor Knox in an epic showdown putting AI right back in the title hunt. In some of the best conditions a WCT event has ever seen Andy was able to overcome the powerful surfing Taylor Knox has shown throughout the entire event. At the now famous right hand point break some of the tour veterans were calling it the next Snapper Rocks. Barrel after barrel was the norm with some calling Taj Burrowâ??s 9.97 cover up was the best tube ride ever. High scores were common with Timmy Reyes nailing down 2 perfect rides. Damien Hobgood grabs his second win at the Globe WCT Fiji. At the coveted Cloudbreak, Damo defeats rookie Shaun Cansdell in perfect conditions (6-8ft) with a 15.40 over Shaun’s 10.50. Within the first couple of minutes Shaun took off on what appeared to be the wave of the day although as it turned out he was wrong. The second set wave which Damo got on was the wave of the day. Damo pulled into what seemed like an eternity long barrel then got spit out to lock in a 9.17. This left Shaun scrapping for the majority of the heat needing an 8 something to overtake the lead. Cloudbreak went flat giving way to Damien’s second win here at Tavarua.

 

 

Quick update on the Globe WCT Fiji at Cloudbreak. Updates thru round 1 and 1st few heats of round 2. Also an update on Kelly Slater's condition.

Bobby Martinez wins the Billabong Pro Tahiti at Teahupoo by beating Fred Patacchia in the final. In a down to the wire finish with last years rookie of the year Fred Patacchia and this years most likely candidate for rookie of the year Bobby Martinez saw 25 minutes of the final with the scores looking closer to a baseball game than a final at one of the CT’s premier location.  Then things started to heat up. Bobby and Freddy went back and forth exchanging insane barrels leaving Freddy needing an 8.10. With final seconds on the clock Freddy drops into a sick barrel, gets spit out and then goes onto a “truck driverâ€? aerial leaving Bobby holding his breath. The scores dropped and it wasn’t enough a 7.90.  Bobby wins his 1^st WCT event and looks to be a serious contender at the title.

 

Kelly Slater wins the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. It came down to a final between Kelly and Parko. Both Kelly and Parko surfing at their very best with epic conditions at Bells Kelly prevailed in the end. Occy was on fire as well making it to the semi's only to be taken down by Parko. So, Kelly wins his second CT event of the year not losing a single heat along the way.

Quick update on the Rip Curl Pro Bell’s Beach surfing contest. This is the second event of the Foster’s ASP WCT Tour and is set to be a good one. With round 2 nearing an end round three is set to go. Listen in as Davo covers the action up to round 3.

Kelly Slater wins the Quicksilver Pro Australia by defeating Taj Burrow in the final. Listen in as Davo covers the event leading up to the nail biting final between 7 time world champ Kelly Slater and a healthy Taj Burrow coming off the injury list. With the event moved down the beach from Snapper Rocks to Duranbah we saw small surf for the final in 2-3 ft waves. Even though the waves were small Kelly hand picked his equipment using one of his pin-tails to fully take advantage of his gouging turns in the small stuff. Andy Irons wins the Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters & takes home The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. AI was unstoppable today at Pipe scoring a perfect 10 on a backdoor double cover-up leaving his competitors comboed. It was an epic Pipe Masters with the Irons brothers going head to head. The older Irons brother figured winning at Pipe and taking home the Triple would be a nice consolation prize as a 2nd place finisher on the CT. It was a bitter sweet ending for Sunny Garcia making it all the way to the semi-finals to take the fourth position losing to Luke Egan and the Irons brothers. Both Sunny and Luke are retiring from the CT this year and will be truly missed for their years and years of leadership and inspiration on the CT.

Davo recaps the first two rounds of the Vans Triple Crown where Pancho Sullivan takes the OP Pro and Jake â??The Snakeâ?? Paterson wins the Oâ??Neill World Cup of Surfing. Also news of Clark Foam closing its doors for good and what it means to the local shaper and the rest of the surfing community. And sad news of the passing of Pro Surfer Malik Joyeux at Pipe as well as some talk about Surf News Radio and the other surf themed podcasts that have just recently sprouted up. Kelly Slater wins his seventh world title today at the Nova Schin contest presented by Billabong. It was a nail bitter throughout the contest as Kelly fell in round 4 to Travis Logie. Andy Irons needed to make it to the Semiâ??s and seemed that he was set to do so after taking down Bede Durbidge in round 4. However in the third heat of the quarter finals Andy met his nemesis and fell to Nathan Hedge. All eyes were on Kelly as the seconds counted down in Andyâ??s heat 3..2..1â?¦.Kelly Jumped up in the air with both arms raised in victory and a smile that went from ear to ear. Meanwhile Damien Hobgood goes on to win the Nova Schin by defeating local standout Victor Ribas.

Andy Irons keeps the Fosters World Championship Tour alive with a win at the Quicksilver Pro France at Hossegor. Kelly could have clinched his seventh world title with a better finish than Andy although fell victim to Damien Hobgood in the quarters. With 3 minutes to go in the Final at the Boost Mobile Pro at Trestles, Ca. Kelly Slater needed an 8.6. Phil Macdonald had priority and let one go that did not look workable. Kelly hopped on it and worked it all the way down to the shore with the local crowd going crazy. Then the silent came….waiting for the judges score…. A 9.07. Utter chaos erupted on the beach. Andy Irons gets his first CT win this year by beating Kelly Slater in the final at the Quicksilver Pro in Japan. Under 6-8 foot shifty conditions Andy posted a 9.5 early on in the match although Kelly came right back and posted an 8.83 and a 9.23. This left Andy needing a 8.56 with less than 6 minutes on the clock. Then it came, the wave Andy needed. He pulled in deep and was covered for what seemed forever, pulled up to an insane floater before the wave closed out on him. The score was posted: 9.93. Kelly gets combo-ed in the final.

Andy Irons wins the Honda US Open of Surfing presented by ONeill. After two weeks of competition it came down to an incredible final between world champ Andy Irons and Rob Machado. With seconds to go Rob needed a 7.77 pulled into a wave that came out of nowhere, the crowd completely silent and the score comes down a 7.33. Andy gets his first win of the year- too bad it does not count towards WCT points. Listen in as Davo dissects the action down on the south side of the HB pier.

An amazing day at the Surfers Hall of Fame inductions in front of HSS downtown, HB. Mark Richards, Tom Carroll, Bob McKnight and Carl Hayward (no longer with us) were inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame today. Surf News Radio is there to catch the action. Surfing Godfather Dale Velzy has died of cancer at the age of 77. He leaves a long legacy of firsts namely 1. First person to put a logo on a surfboard 2. First person to sponsor a surer and #3. First person to put a logo on a shirt. Basically he is responsible for the entire surf industry (sorry Hobie). Additionally another sad report on the passing of long time HB fixture; Mike Morgan. He recently left us at the tender age of 44. He was the Chick Hearn of surf announcing. He will be truly missed. Dave also gives an update of camping at Doheny and teaching his 5 year old daughter to surf.
